The students and staff of Dietrich-Bonhoeffer Gymnasium arrived last Thursday to spend a week with their exchange partners from Sandringham. The exchange started in 2009 and has been a key part of the MFL calendar since then with many students and families setting up life-long friendships over the years.
The combined group spent a day at Oxford, seeing the Treasury of the Bodleian library where the English students were excited to see the original manuscript by Wilfred Owen’s famous poem, ‘Dulce et decorum est’ with annotations, which they have just studied at school.
The weekend was spent with families and Monday and Tuesday in lessons at school including a Food Tech lesson, courtesy of Mrs Flahive. On Wednesday, the German group visited the Tower of London and had a ride on a London bus to see the sights.
The pizza party on Wednesday night brought the successful week to a close before the German group left for Hamburg on Thursday.
We will look forward to the return trip next July and in the meantime, watch out for letters for next year’s exchange if you want to benefit from this wonderful opportunity of experiencing another culture from the inside and not as a tourist.
