As the school is growing in size, we needed to create a new house within the Sandringham house system.
Rather than just add one new name, students voted from a shortlist of 15 famous Britons. The criteria for making the shortlist were to be a) British, b) made a significant and lasting contribution to society and c) deceased! We also wanted to have a mix of both women and men.
Students had a series of assemblies on the house icons over a two week period. Students and staff subsequently voted electronically for their preferred House icons and well over 1,000 votes were cast.
The results were announced in a special lunchtime assembly on Wed 17th May where the Heads of House drew lots randomly to be allocated one of the chosen icons:
Brunel becomes (Amy) Johnson, aviator and adventurer,
Darwin becomes (Isaac) Newton, mathematician, astronomer and physicist
Erikson becomes (Jane) Austen, novelist and social commentator
Knight becomes (Millicent) Fawcett, suffragist and political leader
Seacole becomes (Edward) Elgar, composer
Van Gogh becomes (Alan) Turing, mathematician, computer scientist, wartime code breaker
The new seventh House will be named (William) Shakespeare, playwright.
The House colours remain the same, with the new House taking the colour grey.
On 5th July we have House Day which will be an excellent opportunity to further research our new icons and make preparations for the full launch in September. Thanks to Mrs Heale for organising such
