About us
Mission Statement:
To excite young people about the arts by providing a professional, educational, and community arts facility that is accessible to all. The SandPit Theatre is a 268 seat multipurpose arts venue situated within the campus of Sandringham School; a comprehensive secondary school with Artsmark Gold status in the heart of Marshalswick, St. Albans.
Since the theatre’s opening in 2001, we have endeavoured to provide a cultural hub for the whole community of St. Albans and further districts. A full programme of in-house productions from members of the school is complemented by productions from community groups and professional touring companies, ensuring a wide variety of performances of all kinds including;
- Concerts and musicals
- Theatre and film
- Dance and comedy
- Educational lectures and workshops
- Presentation and Awards evenings
The venue has an established children’s scheme; ‘Little Diggers,’ which consists of workshops, shows, films and art and craft sessions. These run all year round with several events running in the school holiday periods. The scheme aims to engage primary aged students and younger with high quality arts activities but at affordable prices. Alongside our events programme we provide a training facility for young people who wish to access backstage elements of the arts industry. We have a small army of volunteers that form our front of house team as well as technical crew for in-house productions. We also run The Performance Support Award, an industry recognised qualification in technical theatre which is open to all. Several volunteers and staff have gone on to careers in reputable companies in the industry.
